The sport was first played by British army officers in around 1870 who were introduced to an Indian game called Poona. In 1873 the Duke of Beaufort introduced the sport at his estate, Badminton, which is where the name originated.
Badminton is a very fast sport with shuttlecocks traveling at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour and the health benefits of this fact paced game are well known. Badminton has been a summer Olympic sport since 1992 and currently is played as singles, doubles & mixed doubles matches.
